Wow, it turns out that everything I knew about Israel Lipski was wrong This is a farcomplicated, debatable case than I thought it was, and the author does a pretty complete job of drawing out all the unanswered questions, doubts and inconsistencies for you Unfortunately, the book was very hard to get into because the first half of it was a line by line analysis of almost every word of testimony from the 2 day trial Surely he could have handled this differently Once Friedland moved on t Wow, it turns out that everything I knew about Israel Lipski was wrong This is a farcomplicated, debatable case than I thought it was, and the author does a pretty complete job of drawing out all the unanswered questions, doubts and inconsistencies for you Unfortunately, the book was very hard to get into because the first half of it was a line by line analysis of almost every word of testimony from the 2 day trial Surely he could have handled this differently Once Friedland moved on to discussing the developments after Lipski s trial and the ripples this case made in the pond of English society, the story moved along much better

Friedland s coverage of the Israel Lipski affair is interesting and compelling His choice to leave untouched the verbatim accounts of the trial in such extent is a curious one, but does allow readers to hear what selections of key testimony would have looked like to the jury It is, at the end of the day, a good illustration of how criminal justice focus can sometimes betray itself in terms of concentrating too much on a fixed idea While Lipski is probably not innocent, it is not a compellin Friedland s coverage of the Israel Lipski affair is interesting and compelling His choice to leave untouched the verbatim accounts of the trial in such extent is a curious one, but does allow readers to hear what selections of key testimony would have looked like to the jury It is, at the end of the day, a good illustration of how criminal justice focus can sometimes betray itself in terms of concentrating too much on a fixed idea While Lipski is probably not innocent, it is not a compelling case for judicial fairness

I m quite happy I randomly found this book for 1 at half price books It doesn t appear to have been in print for many years Few books have given me such a unique glimpse into the Victorian period like this one did I feel like it exposed me to how difficult of a time the Jewish immigrants in London had it at the time, and I also learned about the Victorian judicial system They really were some of the first to try to do it fairly, and it was interesting to watch them trying to get the kinks o I m quite happy I randomly found this book for 1 at half price books It doesn t appear to have been in print for many years Few books have given me such a unique glimpse into the Victorian period like this one did I feel like it exposed me to how difficult of a time the Jewish immigrants in London had it at the time, and I also learned about the Victorian judicial system They really were some of the first to try to do it fairly, and it was interesting to watch them trying to get the kinks out of a system that we are still using in the modern world.I feel like I found a little gem with this one, and I was quite satisfied to place it on the bookshelf in my library when it was done I honestly wouldn t be surprised if this is a book I find reason to pull down and reference years later when trying to answer a personal question or clarifying something else I m studying
